Gold Vermeil
Gold vermeil (pronounced "ver-may") is a legally regulated term that refers to high quality gold-plated jewelry. It has a thick layer of gold plating that is at least 2.5 microns thick over a sterling silver base. After solid gold, gold vermeil is the highest quality of gold tone jewelry that you can buy. It is a great option for those who are seeking an affordable and high quality alternative to solid gold jewelry.
Low quality gold-plated jewelry has a very thin layer of gold over brass or copper as their base metals. It is susceptible to tarnish as the thin layer of gold will wear off quickly, allowing the unattractive metal base to show through and potentially irritate the skin. In contrast, gold vermeil has a thick layer of gold plating so the color will last much longer. Gold vermeil also has a sterling silver base, which means the whole piece is made entirely of precious metals. As it does not contain nickel , which is found in low quality gold-plated jewelry, our jewelry is suitable for those with sensitive skin.
At A+A, we use 18 karat gold for plating, and ensure a 2.5 micron thickness for a rich and durable finish. We prefer 18K gold for the outer plating because pure gold (aka 24K gold) is too malleable (soft) and has very strong yellow and orange tones, which give it a brassy look.
Rhodium-Plated Sterling Silver
Rhodium plating is a process used in jewelry to coat pieces with a thin layer of rhodium. This plating enhances the appearance, durability, and resistance to tarnishing and gives jewelry a brilliant, mirror-like finish.
Rhodium is a rare, silvery-white metal from the platinum group of elements. It is highly reflective and resistant to corrosion and tarnishing and provides a protective coating that maintains its brilliance over time. Due to its hardness, rhodium is not malleable enough for jewelry making on its own, but it can significantly enhance the durability and shine of sterling silver as a plating.
